Bruno Fernandes retaken penalty earns Manchester United fortunate win over West Brom

3 days ago 10

Fernandes was given a second chance to convert from the penalty spot after goalkeeper Sam Johnstone strayed off his line while saving the first attempt.

The Portugal international had conceded a spot-kick at the other end a few minutes earlier, only to see the decision overturned by VAR.

Slaven Bilic’s disciplined West Bromwich could have stolen a result and hit the crossbar through substitute Callum Robinson after falling behind but lacked the cutting edge to truly hurt United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side avoided the ignominy of failing to win their opening five home games for the first time since 1972 and climbed into the top half of the table with this result, above Manchester City.

Nevertheless, the United manager will know that improvement is needed in order to build on back-to-back league victories and recover from an unconvincing start to the campaign.
