iPad App Video Review: Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing

The main control system is a tilt-to-steer system, with a drift and a brake/reverse button on one side, with power ups appearing on the left after being collected. It might take a while to get used to the tilt, and you can adjust the sensitivity, but it doesn’t keep the game from being fun. There are some alternate control methods to try if you wish. The gameplay is classic kart racing, drift around corners, hit boosts, and pick up those offensive and defensive power-ups. If you’re playing as Sonic, you can even pick up the chaos emeralds and go Super Sonic! All the different racers play a bit differently, with different acceleration and handling. The tracks are all plucked out of the various franchises themselves, with their own theme songs and sound effects, and they are all very well done and a lot of fun. This is definitely the best kart racer available for mobile devices.

The game is stocked with features too. As you start the game, you create a SEGA ‘License’ Complete with picture of your favorite character. As you complete all kinds of races, you will rack up SEGA Miles, which are used to unlock new tracks, racers, pictures, etc. There are grand prix races with three difficulties, and single standalone races, which can be tweaked to your liking in terms of lap count and power-ups. There are also time trial races against ghosts from the development team. The game is packed with achievements and leaderboards, and supports OpenFeint. There is even a multiplayer mode that lets you race against your friends through blue-tooth. There is a lot of content here to keep you busy for a long time.

With the smooth, cartoony graphics and fantastic gameplay, this is definitely a title to give a try, even more so if you are a SEGA fan. If you love Mario Kart and similar games, then you will definitely enjoy this one. The only real gripe that I have is a lack of several favorite racers from the console version, Like Banjo Kazooie. This app is iOS universal, and it will cost you five dollars. Check it out.
