Kevin Smith iPhone app takes realistic approach to branded apps

At least Kevin Smith is honest. In the description for his Kevin Smith iPhone app (99 cents), he says, “…you’ve spent 99 cents on way dumber crap. If you’re remotely into my nonsense, at the very least, this me-centric app will make you smile.” Because of Smith’s realism, I knew to, well, lower my expectations upon launching this iPhone app, which means that even with its low level of content, I still didn’t hate it.

Really, lack of content is the primary issue for most branded iPhone apps, and if Smith continues to update Kevin Smith, especially with exclusive information, he should keep his fans happy. Kevin Smith offers exclusive photos from Smith’s life in the aptly titled “Cheese” section and a photo booth for users to take a fan snapshot with Silent Bob. The ranting Kevin Smith action figure includes choice phrases such as: “We know that you’re a failure,” and “Snoogans.” I was surprised to see that the blog “News Askew” is integrated, while Smith’s personal blog “My Boring Ass Life” (silentbobspeaks.com) is not.

The media section includes film soundtracks, fan videos, and a selection of Smith’s previous films (but only those available for purchase on iTunes, which means no “Jersey Girl,” thank God). You can also download a Kevin Smith ringtone, access Smith’s podcast and SModcasts, download Kevin Smith wallpaper, get tour information or find out when—to the second—Smith’s new film “Cop Out” is released.
