As anyone who has been there can attest, the water surrounding the French Polynesian island of Bora Bora is so vividly turquoise that it is almost startling.  Because of that, the island’s resulting popularity and the construction of 120+ room resorts to bring in even more visitors to admire it, the one knock on Bora Bora is how crowded it had become over the years. But the guests who take over Bora Bora One, the 7.5 acre estate on Motu Piti Aau, an islet east of the main island reachable by a 10 minute boat ride from the airport, will feel that they have the lagoon to themselves.

The five bedroom home at the centerpiece of the estate was built in 2015 and just redesigned utilizing handcrafted contemporary furnishings and pieces from local artisans such as handwoven pandanus baskets and lamps fashioned from wood imported from the Tuamotu islands. Sculptor Teva Victor, French Polynesia’s most famous artist, also contributed original sculptures composed of volcanic stones, his trademark. The overall aesthetic of the house is Colonial framework blended with Tahitian spirit.

The renovation, which was completed in March, also added facilities to the property. A new pool deck overlooking the lagoon was constructed as a continuation of the indoor living room and filled with teak chaises with hammocks suspended between the trees and pillows for lounging placed under them. A jacuzzi was also added outside of the master bedroom leading to the pool area as well as a gym  containing a range of equipment from a Woodway Wattbike to a Concept 2 rower and punching and speed bag. The gym also has a higher design quotient than the typical gym with local Tahaa stone used for the interior and exterior walls, the Moroccan wall finish tadelakt which combines lime plaster and black soap to create a waterproof, slightly glossy covering and white oak custom millwork. Another new addition is a championship standard tennis court with accompanying pavilion.

Along with the new design and construction, the estate also recently transitioned to an ecologically sustainable property, planting an organic garden for ingredients, collecting rainwater and providing power through solar panels. But there’s clearly enough juice to run an impressive collection of electronic devices including 65” LG TVs in the bedrooms, an indoor and outdoor SONOS sound system, high speed internet fast enough to conduct Zoom meetings clearly and download large files and a VOD Zapitti server with over 150 current movies and Apple TV with Netflix.

During the day, though, guests will undoubtedly be outdoors taking advantage of the setting. Water activities that are either available on site or that can be arranged through the concierge include scuba diving and snorkeling the world famous undersea life, jet skiing, parasailing or swimming with sharks and manta rays. Excursions to visit other islands can also be arranged as well as local bands brought over for entertainment. But many guests are content to just hang out on the beach and wade into the lagoon.
