As the United States approached 200,000 coronavirus deaths, Donald Trump appeared to blame Democrats for the world’s highest death toll, suggesting the country’s statistics were low “if you take the blue states out”.

Virginia Democrat Don Beyer branded the US president’s comments “appalling", saying “This is quite simply one of the most appalling and inhuman statements ever uttered by an American President”.

Speaking at the White House on Wednesday night, Mr Trump also criticised the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) director Robert Redfield, who the president called “confused” for suggesting a coronavirus vaccine wouldn’t be delivered until late 2021 - in contradiction with his own statements.
