Fresh iPhone Apps for October 14: Trainer Drop, Checkins, Amazon Mobile

Heading up today’s list is a new take on Tetris featuring footwear, and an update to Amazon Mobile. Also, a cool way to find your Facebook friends, and an app that lets you control your FiOS TV from your iPhone.

Trainer Drop (iPhone) $0.99

It’s Tetris with sneakers! Trainer Drop is all about clearing falling sneakers from the sky and placing them into color-coded shoeboxes. The better you do, the more chain reactions invoked which leads to showers of coins and score multipliers.

With its addictive game play, intuitive controls, plus pretty retro-style graphics and music, Trainer Drop is a brand new release that’s definitely worth getting your feet wet with.

Amazon Mobile update (iPhone) Free

Amazon.com’s mobile app is already great for shopping and comparing prices while on the go. Users can punch in what they’re looking for and see prices on Amazon.com or even buy them. It’s even cooler to see if the price of an object right in front of you is a better deal than you could get by shopping online.

Stepping up the price comparison features of Amazon Mobile, the app has been updated to allow the use of the iPhone camera as a barcode scanner. Now you can flip over an item you’re looking at in a brick-and-mortar store, scan the barcode, and instantly pull up the listing on Amazon. That has the potential to save people a lot of money.

Checkins (iPhone) Free

Facebook’s recently released Places application allows its users to “check in” to different locations using the Facebook mobile app. Basically, it allows your Facebook friends to see where you are and what you’re doing – like a geo-tagged status update.

Checkins is an app that scours through your Facebook friends, finds the ones who are currently checked-in using Places, and adds them to a Google map on your iPhone. Instantly, you can see where your friends are in relation to you, allowing for easy meet-ups. It’s a cool idea and it doesn’t cost you a thing.

Verizon FiOS TV Mobile Remote (iPhone) Free

This one’s a bit of a niche market, but for those Verizon FiOS customers out there, it’s also pretty cool.

The FiOS TV app turns your iPhone into a remote that runs your set-top FiOS box. The app presents all the major functions of a regular FiOS remote, with the added bonus of having access to the iPhone’s keyboard for typing in the names of shows and programs you’re searching for.

Another cool function is that the FiOS remote app allows you to stream pictures from your iPhone to your TV screen, and to switch through them using the swipe feature on the iPhone. Now you can instantly project your vacation photos in front of stranded dinner guests, and watch their jaws drop!
