New Pro Football iPhone app can barely manage the game

Despite being America’s most popular sport, professional football has struggled on the iPhone. There are plenty of good games and fantasy football iPhone apps, but we have not seen an NFL-specific news and stat app that is head and shoulders above the rest.

Zumobi Inc. takes its shot in the form of Pro Football (NFL news, scores, and stats),  also known as Sporting News Pro Football. While there are plenty of good things going on with this app, in the end it fails to break out of the pack.

Pro Football gives all the stats and standings any NFL fan would want and it offers articles and blogs from the Sporting News writers. The app boasts a podcast section, but it only includes of a daily feed of the 2 Live Stews radio program. Doug and Ryan Stewart are great, but this feature is incredibly disappointing due to a lack of content.

Pro Football has a great design and it manages to pack a lot of information. You can select your favorite team and use its color palate as your background, and navigating between the main menu and the sub-menus is fast.

Unfortunately, I also experienced multiple bugs. They were small things that were fixed simply by a restart, but Pro Football was released in August and there has already been an update, so it’s hard to forgive this kind of thing.

The content is great, but the podcast section is lame. The design is nice, but it’s buggy. For every positive there’s a negative, and that leads to an average experience.

Pro Football might actually be the top NFL-specific news app available, but that speaks more to its competition than it does to the quality of this app. It’s free, so NFL buffs should give it a whirl – just don’t complain when you’re left wanting more.
