Ocarina turns your iPhone into an ancient instrument

Ocarina is not a bad app, just one that appeals to a very narrow fan base that appreciates ancient wind instruments and the “Zelda” video game series. Some people will really love this app while others will be left completely unimpressed.

As I am not a Zelda aficionado, I would not know the difference between an ocarina and a hole in the wall. So when I downloaded SonicMule’s Ocarina, I had no idea what to expect, other than something flute-like. And what I got was, well, something flute-like. You blow into the microphone of your iPhone and cover ‘holes’ on the screen to make different sounds.

The 99 cent app also allows you to listen to people around the world playing their ocarina, which is probably my favorite part of this app given my limited ability. You can also go to the app’s Web site and participate in a worldwide Ocarina jam session.

Ocarina is not a game like Guitar Hero or Rock Band. For about $1, it is probably worth checking out for yourself.

As for me, I am going to go revisit some old Zelda games.
