New iPhone apps worth downloading: TiltShiftGen2, Ancestry update, Puzzle Knights

Today’s apps follow a similar theme. First is TiltShiftGen2, ushering in a new generation of the TiltShift Generator app specially for iOS 7. Speaking of generations, you can get your genealogy fix with the latest update to Ancestry, the official app of, and build your own family tree. On the gaming side, we have a match-three battle game hybrid called Puzzle Knights, and it’s pretty darn cool.

TiltShiftGen2 ($0.99)

What’s it about? Something of a rebirth of the TiltShift Generator app, this is a sleek new toy camera for the new iOS generation.

What’s cool? The name ‘TIltShiftGen2″ is something of a play on words. Gen2 can be read as generator 2, or generation 2. The app has been rebuilt from the ground up for iOS 7. with a slick new interface, real-time filter effects and 9 different filter types, different kinds of lens blur, and so much more, like square photos and color correction. The idea is to take professional looking photos in various fun styles. It’s simple to use, but very cool overall, and a great follow up to the original TiltShift Generator – Fake Miniature.

Who’s it for? People who want to take creative photos without going into a separate editor.

What’s it like? ToyCamera from the same developer is one option. PuddingCamera is another solid one.

Ancestry update (Free)

What’s it about? The official genealogy app of lets you build and view the story of your own lineage in cool new ways.

What’s cool? The Ancestry app has always been improving with the times, this latest update bringing it to its fifth iteration. You could probably start a neat family tree just of this app and its history. The app has always been a great way to build your family tree and learn a bit of history, exploring historical documents and records using the massive database of the site. This new Ancestry lets you build your tree faster by connecting to Facebook and using your Contacts list, build timelines, and read about your ancestors through story-like narratives, all in a new design made especially for iOS 7.

Who’s it for? People who are curious about their own personal history, or just history in general.

What’s it like? GedView is another family tree building app.

Puzzle Knights (Free)

What’s it about? A match three RPG hybrid that lets you build up your knight before taking him online to battle.

What’s cool? Puzzle Knights is split into two basic phases. The first phase has you building your nights stamina by playing a basic match-three game. Then, you’ll take your built up knight into battle, either online or offline, reaping rewards with every win. The battle system isn’t very complex. It’s basically a rock-paper-scissors type of game, with with attacks, counterattacks, and blocks all countering each other. It’s not a very deep game, but it’s pretty well made with a nice clean visual style. Mojaro’s previous game, KnightScape, was also pretty unique and deserving of some more attention.

Who’s it for? People who want a slightly different kind of match three.

What’s it like? Puzzle Quest 2 is the big one, though that’s a far more complex game. Scurvy Scallywags is great too.
